My friend Brooke Ferguson decided to try running her business from Thailand. That was ten years ago and she’s still going  strong.

Brooke is a Lifestyle and Business Coach. Talk about drinking the Kool-Aide! She started with a three month stint to see if she could really run her business abroad. Then she realized that not only *could* she, but she also thrived. That’s when she realized that she never had to return home if she didn’t want to.

Over the years she has learned to navigate the world of business overseas, getting paid across international boundaries, and providing amazing service across all the time zones of the world.

To assist her clients, Brooke has developed a massive training that includes 42 videos and worksheets. She has sold this in the past for $600. Now, as she describes it, she has completed all her “bucket list” items and is ready to operate at a much higher level. So she’s giving away this training in order to spread her business and best practices to a much wider audience.

Please check out the podcast – and subscribe to that massive training. I have!

Josh Peterson has been a friend and mentor to me for many years. I am happy to interview him about his company and what he’s up to.

Josh is the co-founder Bering McKinley, a consulting firm for MSP’s and IT Solution Providers. He has been in the IT Solution Provider arena for the last 15 years. First as an owner, then as a management consultant with Taylor Business Group for 8 years, and now as founder of Bering McKinley.

Additionally Josh is a maniac for strong financial accounting practices being followed at business of all sizes. He believes, as Peter Drucker did: “if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.” Josh has a deep respect for anyone who has the nerve to start their own business but also believes that only gets you so far. Sooner or later you have to take accountability for your business and perform at extraordinary levels to enjoy the lifestyle you deserve.

In this interview, Josh talks about the Bering McKinley Peer Teams. Note – that’s not groups. Listen and find out why. 🙂

Lisa Hendrickson

Lisa Hendrickson is “Call That Girl” – an Office 365 and Outlook specialist. In this 30 minute interview we cover her business strategy, supporting O365, migrating email to the cloud, SEO blogging, and much more.

Lisa has grown a thriving business serving several audiences. She created the business to serve end users. But over time she’s found herself helping I.T. consultants figure out how to move Exchange email up to the cloud with Appriver’s Office 365 offering.

We have recently started selling Lisa’s great 7-video training set: Outlook Troubleshooting for Technicians. See http://www.smbbooks.com.

Harry Brelsford
is the founder of SMB Nation. In this interview Harry announces a new Marketing as a Service platform called Pivot. We talk about marketing and analytics in the SMB community – and a lot more. See http://SMBNation.com/pivot.

Harry stresses that modern marketing requires analytics. You are wasting money if you just do a little SEO and buy Google ads. In addition, there are lots of things involved in marketing that the average MSP owner can’t do or shouldn’t do. You really don’t have time for analyzing your clients, split-testing ads, and all the other modern elements of marketing.

Subscriptions start at $300/month. You need one one client to pay for that.

Debbie Leoni is my life coach. I thought it would be useful to introduce her to the SMB IT community. I get questions about why I have a life coach coach and how that’s different from a business coach. I hope this interview answers those questions.

You can learn more about Debbie from her web site at www.debbieleoni.com. You can also connect with her on Facebook. She has some great Facebook “Live” videos. So keep an eye out for those.

You can buy Debbie’s book – I Am Fearless – from her web site, on Amazon, or over at SMB Books.

We’re kicking off a whole new podcast series here at SMB Community Podcast. So subscribe today so you don’t miss a thing.

We’re going to be doing a series of “video call” podcasts of about 30 minutes each. These will be recorded as both a Video and as an Audio download. So you can decide whether you want to watch or just listen.

To kick off the new series, I talked with Amy Babinchak from Third Tier and Sell My MSP. Amy is very well known in the SMB IT community. Recently, she’s noticed that there are a lot more buyers looking for MSPs than there are sellers listed to sell their business.

One reason for this, she believes, is that there’s a myth in the community that a small MSP has no value. I’m not sure where that myth originated, but it’s one of the things people keep telling each other over and over again.

Amy has a very different perspective: If you’ve been making money in your business for 10-20 years, it has value and it can be sold. You just need to find the people who are looking to buy. A lot of buyers want to be anonymous, though, so their competition doesn’t find out that they’re in expansion mode.

That’s where Sell My MSP comes in. It’s like a dating service for your business . . . except you can’t use a ten year old picture. The site includes a tool you can use to get some idea of what your business is worth.

Get all the details – and more – in the interview:

Todd Billiar

Todd Billiar

Yesterday I talked with a couple of pros about the hiring environment for small IT shops. The good news: According to Todd Billiar from VAR Staffing, there’s about a 1-2% unemployment rate for I.T. Consultants. The bad news: Everyone wants more money – even if they’re not qualified.

This podcast includes interviews with Todd as well as Josh Peterson, one of the great coaches in the IT community.

Todd recently published an article in ChannelPro SMB magazine. That got me thinking about the best interviewing approaches today. I discovered that he’s got all kinds of great information about the trends in our industry today. Here we talk about some of those trends, including the rising cost of technicians as well as the types in highest demand.

Todd’s Billiar Contact Info:

email tbilliar@varstaffing.com
Phone 972-847-0566

Next up I talked to Josh Peterson about the recruiting/hiring process. Josh is a firm believer that you should also be talking to people about working for you.

Josh Peterson

Josh Peterson

Like everything else in business, you should be prepared for the “urgent” situation when you need a new technician. You need to avoid hiring because you’re in a panic. You need to avoid hiring with a single interview, or the the person who walks in the door.

Josh also gives some great advice about making the most of the first day, first week, and 30-60-90 days. Even if you don’t execute that flawlessly, having a plan before you need it will be very helpful.

Finally, Josh talks about the best interview technique for getting the information you need from technicians.

Last week we had a report from Robin Robins’ Big Seminarwww.robinsbigseminar.com. This is the second report on that event – featuring an interview with Robin herself on why this event is different from other events in the community.

In this podcast, I interview four folks: Nadia Karatsoreos from MAXfocus, Stephen Swavley from Documentation Toolkit, Rob Rae from Datto, and Robin Robins from Technology Marketing Toolkit. The first three are vendors. As you know, I love vendors because the pay the bills at these events. They literally make it possible for us to have channel-related events.

3D Printing – An Interview with Alan Ware

Sacramento has a great organization called Hacker Lab – part hacker space, part maker space, and part co-working space. I joined last year and plan to cover a number of subjects related to the things they do there. This includes programming, Arduino, robotics, 3D printing, and more.

ListenNowGuy

This is an interview with Alan M. Ware, B.S.M.E.

Alan is a 3D design and manufacturing engineer. He teaches the 3D Printing class at Hacker Lab. I took the class and then asked him for a quick interview.

Recorded February 2014

I also recorded some videos.

One is already posted. The other one needs some production. The first video is here:

http://youtu.be/ncLrcYIbOeA

Hacker Lab is open to everyone. It’s a great place to learn and to prototype your ideas. Find out more at http://www.hackerlab.org. Hacker Lab is located at 1715 I Street, Sacramento, CA.

Alan also mentioned “The Design Spot” at the Arcade public library – 2443 Marconi Ave., Sacramento, CA. They have computers with PhotoShop, AutoCAD, and other software as well as 3D printers that anyone can use.

Alan’s web site – http://www.AMWDesign.net – has a number of great links for anyone interested in finding out more about 3D printing, the software used, and some of the hardware options. (He promised he’d tune it up after the video comes out.)

Continuum Bundles Everything – And Lets You Test Drive at a Low Price With No Obligation

ListenNowGuy

Continuum (formerly Zenith) was the original RMM solution with NOC back end included. Today they have a very large variety of offerings, including Level 1 and Level 2 tech support on the desktop. They have a new Mobile Device Management program, their Vault BDR, and a “Tech Advantage” program that allows you to send project work to their team.

matt waters continuum

They also have a new “Marketing Advantage” program, which Matt describes in this podcast.

I talked to Matt at the Continuum booth at Autotask Community Live. I asked him about their Starter package. He gives some good details here. Basically, you have a small buy-in with no long term contract, and you get just about every product they offer.

They basic RMM agent includes a variety of add-on software as well, including anti-virus and anti-malware software all for one low price.

Karen Guarino from Reflexion – Spam Filtering, HIPAA Training, and Automated Email Encryption for HIPAA Compliance

ListenNowGuy

Karen  Guarino is the Channel Support Manager at Reflexion. She talked to us at the Autotask Community Live event about the latest and greatest campaigns from Reflexion. Of course Reflexion does spam filtering, but they have added some cool services that allow partners to more easily serve their medical/HIPAA clients.

Karen Guarino

In addition to spam filtering, Reflexion offers training on a few topics. The one I’ve been involved in is their HIPAA certification training.

In addition to that, Reflexion has a cool email encryption service that scans outbound emails and encrypts them if they meet certain criteria. For example, if it detects a Social Security  (not allowed to be emailed under the HIPAA HiTech Act), it automatically encrypts the email.

John Phillips: Synnex has an entire Small Business Team

I talked to John Phillips from SMB Connect at Synnex while I was as Autotask Community Live.

ListenNowGuy

Synnex SMB Connect

Synnex SMB Connect

John was at AT Live to educate folks about a special sales group at Synnex focused completely on the SMB space. The group has 44 sales people, credit programs, and exclusive vendor rebates for participants of the program. See details at www.synnex.com/smbconnect.

You can find out more about the program at that site or email smbconnect@synnex.com, or call them at: 855-899-0050.

John even has his direct number and cell phone on the SMB Connect web site. That’s pretty accessible!

In this interview John also talks the reseller program, the refurbished product service, licensing, and more. One of the cool tools is Renew Solve – a free tool for tracking license renewals that sends reminder messages to clients – from YOU and not from the vendor.

Strategies for a Post-SBS World

“June 30th isn’t that far away.”

Kevin Beares is the Community Lead for the Windows Server and System Group at Microsoft. Kevin is in charge of driving community interaction for the SMB space.    ListenNowGuy

I caught up with Kevin at SMB Nation Spring at the Microsoft Conference Center. Kevin gets props for putting himself on stage and letting the entire crowd put their toughest questions against him. It was supposed to be an hour, but Kevin stayed more than two hours and was accompanied by Microsoft MVPs Steven Banks and Cliff Galiher, who did a good job of representing both the Microsoft perspective and the partner perspective.

Steve Banks, Kevin Beares, Cliff Galiher One of the first things Kevin pointed out to me is that there IS a product team that is still focused on the SMB space. The Home Server and Small Business Server products have been re-jiggered and the current SKU is Server Essentials. But the team still exists.

He did not say this, but the comment “Read into that what you want” allows me to read into it that there will be a new product or perhaps product line.

It’s kind of funny. Just a couple days ago I reported on the Small Biz Thoughts Blog that Frank Shaw from Microsoft was irritated by the negative feedback they’ve received over Windows 8. He basically said that feedback is good, but not too much.

I have always found that Microsoft is very willing to take feedback. Sometimes they sound a bit defensive and really just want to explain their position. But they do listen and they do take the message back to the development team.

Kevin Beares is doing a great job listening to the community and gathering their feedback. He is fully engaged on the Facebook Group that is discussing changes in SBS. See https://www.facebook.com/groups/131473643614130/. And rather than simply defending past decisions, Kevin did a great job on stage echoing back to the community: “I understand your concerns about pricing ….” He also offered up a configuration strategy for putting Server Essentials and Exchange on the same box.

I ran into Arlin in Orlando a few weeks ago, but we never connected for a podcast. So we made a point of connecting my phone a few days ago.

Arlin Sorensen of HTG

Arlin Sorensen of HTG

Heartland Technology Groups (HTG) have been a major force in the SMB space for many years. HTG programs have traditionally been face to face peer groups. Right now there are about 250 companies in the face to face groups.

But now there are another 70 companies involved with HTG’s online program. Arlin gives us some good information about the specialty groups that are evolving. There are specialty groups for managers, smaller companies, and even much larger companies.

HTG’s big annual conference will be in Dallas May 6-9, 2013.

In addition, HTG is organizing a “CEO Vision” Summit in Omaha, NE August 15-16, 2013. This will be a special “Ted-Style” format. Arlin gives the details in our podcast.

One of my favorite resources in the SMB community is Robert Crane – Directory of the Computer Information Agency. You can find him at CIAOPS.com.

I refer to Robert as a resource because he really is “the man to know” with regard to SharePoint. That includes the SharePoint services shipped with Small Business Server 2003, 2008, 2011, the free version from Microsoft, or the full-price product now available as a hosted environment.

SharePoint Operations Guide

SharePoint Operations Guide by Robert Crane

Robert maintains a massive resource library he simply calls SharePoint Operations Guide. See more information at SMB Books and CIAOPS.com. The SharePoint Operations Guide now includes a great deal of information on Office 365 and how you can integrate these products to add value for your clients.

Robert and I had a phone chat yesterday (Well, today in Australia).

Robert gives us some great ideas about how to make money with these new products. He spells out a wonderful analogy between technology consulting and shepherding sheep. Imagine that you have always tended a small group of servers (sheep). With modern tools you can now tend a much larger flock. So the next question is, how can we add value to the service we provide.

– Download the Interview with Robert Crane here.

Christmas Special:

Right now – through Christmas Day 2012 – the SharePoint Operations Guide is $50 off at SMBBooks.com. No coupons. No codes. Just add it to your cart. That means more than 2,000 pages of great information on SharePoint and Office 365 for only $249 USD.

I dropped by the Symantec booth at IT Nation and had some fun horsing around with Anne Stobaugh and Dal Gemmell. They brought me up to speed with some of the latest programs at Syamantec.

Dal Gemmell, Karl Palachuk, Anne StobaughAnne made a point that Symantec is trying to be very MSP friendly. They offer a monthly subscription buying program AND promised that you don’t have to worry about Symantec contacting end users! The monthly program is a buy-what-you-need model and great for cash flow.

A few products are available in this program either on-premise or in the Cloud, including End Point Protection and Backup Exec.

Dal focuses on that Endpoint Protection piece and says Symantec is totally supporting Windows 8 devices at this time. As he says, “In this business, if you don’t adapt quickly to change, you’re not going to be in business for very long.”

Symantec is also a big supporter of HTG. They support some groups directly and try to have a tight relationship. Their goal her is to stay tuned to what MSPs are looking for.

Symantec has an “MSP Specialist” team that focuses completely on MSP products and issues. You can contact the MSP team at … msp@symantec.com or call 855-210-1101.

I sat down with Larry Walsh, CEO of The 2112 Group at IT Nation.

The 2112 Group is an analyst firm that supports vendors in the solution provider community. They provide “leadership and best practices” for solution providers.

Larry Walsh the 2112 Group

Larry Walsh – The 2112 Group

On the topic of having vendors selling direct versus selling through the channel, Larry says that this has always been true. He explains how you differentiate yourself so the vendors’ practices become irrelevant.

On the question of how vendors can help get the right information to solution providers, he says “The channel is awash in content.” So he is not worried about whether solution providers will have access to information. But he argues that solution providers need to figure out what their business model is going forward. Once they do that, they can get the information they need from their vendors.

Interview with Jon Sastre

Jon SastreOne of the best interviews I had at SMB Nation was with Jon Sastre, one of the IAMCP leaders at the state, national, and international levels. Jon is also a very successful managed service provider, value added reseller, and system integrator.

One of the reasons I love working with my brother Manuel is that he is AMAZING at defining and implementing successful processes. Earlier this year he started a new coaching program geared specifically toward Managed Service Providers.

Manuel PalachukManuel was the President of my MSP (KPEnterprises) for three years. After that he took a position as the outsourced Chief Operating Officer for an MSP in Florida. He turned their operation around and brought them four quarters in a row of profitability – something they had not had before.

Manuel has a great resource site at www.conceptualageconsulting.net. Check it out and review the programs he has available.

Just FYI: My coaching program is full and I have a waiting list. Trust me. You will miss NOTHING if you engage with Manuel. He is the best team leader I have ever seen. He is also amazing at defining and implementing processes. After all – he had primary responsibility for the 270 page checklist in the Network Migration Workbook!

Our mastery of ConnectWise, Autotask, Kaseya, and Contiuum (formerly Zenith) is due to Manuel’s leadership.

Download the Interview with Manuel Palachuk here.

You can also find him at:

www.facebook.com/manuelpalachuk

If your company could use some personalized coaching to get to the next level, please contact Manuel today!

P.S., NO: I’m not just saying that because he’s my brother. I have five brothers. Each has skills. Some I promote, some I don’t. Manuel really is “the man” when it comes to getting your business pointed in the right direction.

Rob Patterson talked to me at SMB Nation about his very successful IT Pro group in New York City – the New York Small Business Server Group. He revealed to us the secrets of holding a meeting, plus the Pre-meeting meeting and the Post-meeting meeting.

Rob PattersonThere’s no B.S. here: Rob is one of the great user group leaders out there. His success is possible because he has a large group of people who jump in and make things happen. The group has many unique features, including Michael Klein’s special presentation on news, trends, links, and more. He is a true resource who “does the reading so you don’t have to.”

The New York group has a very strong community. Over 300 members with up to 100 at a meeting (200 when Microsoft has a big event).
